Beautiful Zambia
Exploring Livingstone Town
Livingstone is now a town - but was formerly the Zambian Capital City! Named after the Scottish Explorer, Dr. David Livingstone. Livingstone’s culture and history is intriguing. Originally known as the Old Drift, Livingstone owes its existence primarily to the Victoria Falls and was established as a staging point across the Zambezi River. Dr. David Livingstone’s journey and first sight of the Falls in 1855 opened up Central Africa to other missionaries, hunters and traders.
History lovers will find Livingstone alive! Livingstone was founded in 1905 at a safe distance from the then swampy banks of the Zambezi. In 1907 it became the capital of what was known as Northern-Western Rhodesia. In 1911 it became the capital of Northern Rhodesia, what is today called Zambia. In 1935 the capital was moved to Lusaka, but Livingstone retained its "Tourist Capital" status as well as much of its original colonial character. Many buildings from the first decade of the century are still in use. The town has preserved much of its colonial character, but is a typical African town with bustling charm. Rich in scenery and heritage, Livingstone today has become the tourist heart of Zambia.
We have a small, bustling town that is full of friendly people, wonderful sights, colourful markets, pop-up artisanal enterprises and a fascinating Museum that’s well worth a visit. Generally, Livingstone is a very safe and friendly town to walk around, you will easily make new friends on any corner of our town! We encourage our guests to be courteous with their camera, it is polite in Zambia to request permission before taking photographs of any people in public places. Our guests have the opportunity to explore Livingstone Town on their Victoria Falls Day Trip. We will help you weave the day together!

SISHEMO STUDIO
Sishemo is a women-led social enterprise based in Nakatindi, a community on the outskirts of Livingstone. With extremely limited employment opportunities within Nakatindi, particularly for women, Sishemo provides economic empowerment opportunities to 7 female artisans. Sishemo take discarded glass bottles from lodges, hotels and households across Livingstone, crush and fire the glass into handcrafted, unique beads using traditional techniques. These beads are then used to make one-of-a-kind necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other bead products.
